搬来几部飞轮健身车,把灯光调暗,把强劲的音响调高,就这么一个“魔术”就变出9亿美元估值的大生意?两个素未谋面的三十几岁女人,在相识3个月后就一起开工作室做生意,10年后把生意转手,两人各进账9000万美元!

说的就是美国高级动感飞轮健身房SoulCycle的两位创办人 Julie Rice及Elizabeth Cutler。创业初期,她俩都初为人母,家有年幼小孩,还双双被老公看贬一定会失败。

但是这对黄金搭挡凭着对健身用户需求的了解,打造了令健身者为之着迷的独特动感氛围,再加上高端的市场品牌定位,令SoulCycle获得巨大的成功。

在美国,健身行业市值超过320亿美元,说明了愿意付费上健身房的消费者大有人在,然而市场的竞争却也十分剧烈,所以谁能为用户带来不一样体验,谁就更容易掳走健身热爱者的芳心。

一般健身中心传统商业模式都是采取会员制,简单而粗暴的方式就是刷了会员信用卡以后,暗地里期盼会员最好不要经常来,那么健身中心就不显得拥挤,同时可以招收更多会员,财源继续滚滚来。

创业点子 被人泼尽冷水

时间回到2006年,Julie及Elizabeth还未认识对方的时候,Julie任职于明星经纪人公司,而Elizabeth则是一位房地产经纪,居住在纽约的两个陌生人却有着共同爱好,就是上健身房。但是试遍了纽约的健身房,两人都觉得未找到能让自己满意的中心。

此外,经历结婚产子的人生新阶段,两人心中都有一把火,觉得好像应该做点什么事。最巧的是,两人都各别向身边的人透露过想开设一间“有灵魂”的健身车工作室。

Elizabeth友人就劝她,健身车运动在90年代的确掀起热潮,但到了2005年热潮已过,加上大部份健身中心都有健身车课,谁会付费只上有健身车的中心?

但Elizabeth却认为,尽管市面上不乏健身车课,但都是包在会员费里附送的,首先送的东西会让觉得没有价值;再来,现有的健身车课都无法打造独特的用户体验。

Julie的丈夫更万分叮嘱她,别在朋友面前提起创办健身车中心的点子,免得惹笑话了!

一次,在共同友人Ruth Zukerman的介绍下,Julie及Elizabeth一见如故,并且在一顿午饭后,就确认两人的理念一致,会是很合拍的伙伴。就像Julie描述的,从只有自己肯定自己,到两人认识之后的互相肯定,造就了她们一起开创让人体验健康、快乐与美好的事业。

Julie及Elizabeth当初是以纽约市2杯鸡尾酒的价码,来制定最初的收费,即每堂课27美元。

采用会员制不是更好吗?反正会员签了一年课程,让公司更容易掌握收入的稳定度。但Julie及Elizabeth非常有信心可营造美好体验,来上过课的学员,一定会再回头!

如Elizabeth所说,当人们愿意掏出钱来付费的时候,他们才会更珍惜, 服务才会变得更有价值。

有学员反馈说,因为美好的体验,所以愿意下次付钱再来,并且每一次都鼓励自己尽最大的努力,不浪费每一分钱的投资。

推出周边产品 多元化收入

由于架构精益,SoulCycle在营运后的第5个月即开始取得收入盈余。

草创时期未有资金大肆宣传,Julie及Elizabeth自行设计了T恤,希望以低成本来达到宣传效果,这意外之举却也让她们开拓了新的收入来源。

许多学员都喜欢SoulCycle印制的T恤,于是产生了需求,这些周边产品也从T恤增加至运动服、紧身裤、运动背心、运动型胸罩等等。

2008年,当市场陷入低迷的时候,Julie及Elizabeth反而逆道而行,开启了第2间分行。同年,SoulCycle的年度营业额达到了1000万美元。

到了2011年,SoulCycle获得高端健身俱乐部品牌运营公司Equinox Fitness献议,收购大部份股权。Julie及Elizabeth形容,Equinox Fitness的收购及参与,让SoulCycle的扩张步伐加速,分行从首6年的仅仅2家,在之后2年内迅速增加至36家。

截至2012年,SoulCycle年度营业额达至3620万美元,而根据该公司在2015年发出的上市招股书,2014年营业额共计1.12亿美元。该公司原订在2016年上市筹集1亿美元,后因市况不佳而取消,但当时公司估值已达到9亿美元!

可遇难求的黄金搭挡

从一间工作室发展到9亿美元估值的健身集团,Julie及Elizabeth一路走来的创业经历启发不少人,尤其是女性企业家。两人在2013年和 2014年,连续两度获高盛集团评选为“100位建设者+创新者 ”(Goldman Sachs’ 100 Builders + Innovators),同时也在2015年获美国《快公司》杂志评选为年度最具创意商人。

2016年,两人把股权悉数脱售给Equinox Fitness并完全退出SoulCycle,每人套现9000万美元。

SoulCycle的成功,无疑是Julie及Elizabeth这对黄金搭挡创下的传奇。两人在受访时更表示人生中其中一件最幸运的事,就是认识了对方,尽管现今两人不再是生意伙伴,但却以好闺蜜的关系经常联系与问候。

她俩同时虏获了财富与友情,人生至此,夫复何求?
